Boat Building – Build a historic replica of a New York Sloop, circa 1880! Get experience in the shop with master craftsman Brendan.
College Readiness Program – Meet with your College Advisor and volunteers for professional help and support to get your personal statement and college application up to snuff so you will be accepted to your chosen colleges or universities.
Club Sports – Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Softball, and Weight Training are all offered as club sports at Harbor School. Take the early boat to work out before school!
Gardening –Watch your plants grow from seeds to food as you care for them. Enjoy when basil turns into pesto for lunch! Aquaponics also play a huge role in Aquaculture and the results are delicious.
Harbor Corps – Harbor Corps is the youth voice of New York Harbor and the Hudson River Estuary. You will work closely with the Hudson Riverkeeper to become an advocate for the health of New York Harbor.
National Honor Society – Students who achieve academically are invited to join a student government organization that promotes student empowerment, effective leadership skills, school engagement, & community service. The UANYHS student Council is affiliated with the NYS & National Associations of Student Councils.
PSAL Running – Run cross country and track on beautiful Governors Island. A great training place for speed and Harbor solidarity.
Rowing Team – Work out in traditional Whitehall gigs at the Village Community Boathouse at Pier 40, focusing on navigation, seamanship, rowing, boat building, and sportsmanship. Compete locally and participate in events up and down the East Coast. Get out on the water, get in shape, and join the Crew!
Sailing Opportunities – Sail throughout the New York Harbor honing your skills to racing level on a variety of small boats and tall ships! Harbor School is lucky to have partnered with Clearwater, Ocean Classrooms, and the Seaport Museum to give students access to multiple sailing opportunities each year.
School-wide Waste Reduction and Compost System – In keeping with Harbor School’s mission of stewardship, the school turns food waste into fertile soil for the garden. In conjunction with Earth Matter, Harbor School interns are involved in expanding waste reduction at school and around Governors Island.
Sea Explorers – Sailing, motor boating, camping, wilderness survival and more! Out on the water or in a wooded camp, tackle challenging and exciting activities. Experience adventures and earn rewards as your skills increase.
SCUBA Diving – Starting in the Bushwick pool, work towards being a certified SCUBA diver who can explore underwater all over the world! This year, scuba divers traveled to Bonaire and swam with dolphins. SCUBA divers work towards Advanced Diver Certification, Scientific Diver Certification, and Rescue Diver Certification.
Step and Cheerleading – Stepping exhibits movements and rhythms seen in African dance continent wide. However, even stronger similarities can be found in the dance expressions of South Africa, home of the powerful ‘Gumboot Dance’. No experience necessary to learn this beautiful art form. Come dance to Hip Hop & pop and make up your own routines.

CHILL Snowboard Club – Harbor School travels to Mountain Creek Ski Resort in New Jersey to participate in Burton’s CHILL program. Get ready to hit the slopes!
