The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form submitted annually by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. Submitting the FAFSA is free and it provides your family with access to the largest source of financial aid. Many states use your FAFSA data to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid. FAFSA submission begins on October 1st each year. For more information about the FAFSA, please click here.
The College Scholarship Service Financial Aid Profile(CSS) is an additional application managed by the College Board allowing college students to apply for financial aid. It is primarily designed to give private member institutions of the College Board a closer look into the finances of a student and their family. It is much more detailed than the FAFSA. The College Board estimates it will take most students/families between 45 minutes and two hours to complete the CSS. Most public and state universities do not use CSS to make financial aid decisions, while most private colleges do. Click here is the list of schools that require the CSS.
